FlowBeams is developing a needle-free injection technology designed to replace traditional syringes with laser-induced microjets.

The system utilises a laser to locally heat liquid medication, creating a rapidly expanding vapour bubble. This expansion propels a high-speed microjet of medicine directly through the skin's surface without the requirement of a physical needle.

This innovation is the result of a decade of academic research originating at the University of Twente. According to researchers, the microjet is approximately the diameter of a human hair.

Clinical and Environmental Impact

While enhancing patient comfort, the technology is designed to support the following within the healthcare setting:

  • Delivery: Designed for high-frequency injections, such as vaccinations and insulin

  • Clinician Safety: No needle-stick injuries.

  • Sustainability: Reduces the environmental impact of medical waste by eliminating the need for single-use plastic syringes and sharps disposal containers.

Would you prefer a laser-based injection over a traditional needle?
